Static Kill: Taking Stock of the BP Oil Spill In the Gulf of Mexico

The deadly explosion and collapse of the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig and resulting three-month well blowout has become, without a doubt, the largest maritime oil spill in history, and one of the worst environmental calamities ever. The spill has also come to personify the worst excesses of elite corporate greed, enabled regulatory laxness, bureaucratic inertia, and the utter destruction of a regional way of life dependent upon the sea.
